Message on where you got that information because I had my friends that are engineers for Garrett search the build number and come up empty handed. It was after the thread was a few days old, so maybe you did not see it. Your turbo's sound pretty good and it would be nice to find out if they are avalible through Garrett's aftermarket program.

The reason why the motors blow with fake T28's is that the compressor is so inefficent that it takes a lot of shaft power to produce boost, power that the turbine has to recover. Since the turbine is not in the design housing either, it's efficency is also somewhat down but not as bad as the compressor.

Since the turbine has to work so hard, the backpressure builds up and you get reversion of exhaust gas through the motor on overlap. Since engines get a lot of there internal cooling done on overlap and instead of cool intake charge, you get a backflow of hot exhaust, the engine gets hotter and hotter until it gets into a detonation cycle and burns down. I have measured over 50 psi in the exhaust manifold with these sort of turbos on a dyno before.

The fact that the poor compressor efficency also pumps close to 300 degree air into the motor at high boost levels does not help either. It is not exactly just that the turbos run hot, unless this is what you mean when you say running hot. I think it's more like the turbo's won't let the motor get rid of heat.

Anyway, I think we are saying the same thing. I think the closest thing to what we discribe as a T28 that you can easily buy is a Pulsar GTI-R turbo, Nismo p/n 14411-RR581 or a JWT Sport 650.

Mike
